INSTALLING LINUX ON A THINKPAD R40E

Installation of Debian was pretty painless here. The standard netinst disk just worked. Later, I did encounter a problem in relation to the wireless card and hotplug.

Note added 14 November 2005 (not sure if it still applies): There is a bug in the Unstable and Testing versions of hotplug which stops my wireless card on the Thinkpad working. This also affects the latest versions of Knoppix and Ubuntu. You should put hotplug on hold before upgrading things from Stable. (If you have already been bitten by the bug you should purge hotplug and install the version from Stable.) I don't know if udev does the same thing; I'm not using udev.
